What is this?

This tool converts Nokia texts (VMG files) and multimedia messages (MMS files) to an mbox format. mbox is a format used by certain email clients (such as Thunderbird) to store electronic mail. With this tool, you can now store your texts in a local folder and view them with your email client.

Currently this tool is rather useless, given that the names associated with particular mobile phone numbers are hard-coded. If your phone supports the N: field in the VMG syntax, then it might prove more successful.

How do I use it?

The form below accepts a zipped folder of VMG files. The files may exist in subfolders within the archive, but currently the folder structure is flattened in the resulting mbox collection.

The script will return a file with the same name as your archive, with the current date in the format “12-02-06” appended to help with folder storage in your Mail profile. You will need to locate your profile directory. There are guidelines for Thunderbird on the Mozilla website, otherwise refer to your email client’s documentation. Local folders are stored in the “Mail/Local Folders” directory.

Before saving the file to the “Local Folders” directory, it is recommended that you close your email client. When you restart the client, the new folder will appear in the menu.
